I agree with another reviewer that the book had too many characters, and was confusing. I ended up taking out a notebook, and re-started the book, listing each character and their traits and jobs, etc. ONLY after I did that did the characters begin to fall into place = and I had to both add to and refer to my notes frequently during the first 100 pages.
I enjoyed reading about the war-torn area of Baglad, and feel the author did a fantastic job of bringing the reality of the war to his readers. Actually, after I'd figured out who was who and did what, I enjoyed the story, and did wonder if there was any thruth to the Christian aspects of the "underworld" church bringing Shiite, Shia, Christian and Muslims together "for the Name of Jesus only."
Although I ALWAYS find the hero character a bit annoying (always wining over extrordinary obsticals,) I did feel the scenes were well developed, contained both fear and humor, and basically were well developed.
