as usual, Turtledove does a masterful job of tweaking history to play the "What if" game - in this case Prince Albert fails to defuse the anger between the US and England; creating a situation where the British attack the United States in 1861! Lincoln has to deal with troops coming down from Canada while General Sherman has to deal with the Confederates alone...
