Indeed, this book is an explanation of Irish history from their mythology to the Sinn Fein Political Party. It seems that Ireland has always been fighting, whether the British or each other.

The Irish Civil War (1922-23) was particularly difficult, claiming more lives than the fight with England over independence. The Anglo-Irish Treaty established the Irish Free State, as an entity independent from the United Kingdom, but within the British Empire.

One group of Irish nationalists accepted the new Free State, while the Republican opposition, opposed it because they wanted complete autonomy. The war was won by the Free State forces.
