This book brings together all the essays from Dr. Lewis Thomas' 3 major collections: "The Lives of Cells", "The Medusa and the Snail" & "Late Night Thoughts Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony" plus selections fronm his autobiography, "The Youngest Science".
Certain themes weave through his essays--the oneness of creation, the adventure of science, the need for broad scientific exploration as opposed to narrow, goal-directed research. To the cold rigor of science Dr. Thomas applies a humane, illminating voice--and rewards us with ideas to be savored and mulled over.
