This is the 13th book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Front and center are Trez and iAm, the two Shadow brothers who have helped the brotherhood since their introduction into the series. The main story is primarily about Trez and Selena. Selena has been stricken with a disease that seems to only affect the Chosen. This story is very emotional and controversial to many. iAm also finds his mate, Maichan. I would have like to see more depth to their story. It felt hurried and very predictable. He is an important character in this book and I feel like he was short-changed.

Of course, one of the things I like about this series is the author's ability to juggle several story threads. I liked the storyline about the s'Hisbe and their politics. I actually wish this had been the premier story in this book. I also liked the little bit we got of Layla and xCor. I keep waiting for their book in the series and wonder exactly what the author will do with their story.

A new character named Paradise was introduced. She is the daughter of Abalone, Wrath's adviser. She will be featured in the BDB spinoff series. Several other characters also moved forward in the series...Throe, Assail, and Luchas. Rhage was also featured heavily in this book. He seemed to be having some unexpected problems including anxiety attacks. I'm interested to see where this story is going. I know the next book will feature him and Mary. I'm always happy when Ward reexamines some of her established couples.

So, even though I would have liked to see some difference circumstances in this book, it was well-written and does move several story threads forward. My rating: 3.5 Stars.
