This autobiographical memoir details the life of Buck Brannerman, a well known individual whose affinity with horses has made his life remarkable in many ways. Growing up with an abusive father who was determined that his sons would become skilled trick ropers, as the younger he realized that it was âpractice or be whippedâ. As early as the age of five he found himself performing with his older brother, Smoky. While the duo became known for their trick roping, Buck became attuned to the horses he rode.

He knew it was important to treat the animals with understanding, respect and compassion and his finely honed skills became more and more in demand. As he discovered he could help owners deal with difficult animals, many requests came his way. It was a process of educating both the animal and the owner for it was often the owner's treatment that made the horse difficult. His approach was so subtle that sometimes the owner didn't know that it was he or she who was responsible for the horse's behavior.

Traveling wherever he needed to give clinics and private guidance, Buck gained the confidence of the wealthy and famous. He became the inspiration for the movie, The Horse Whisperer. Serving a consultant he was a stand-in for Robert Redford, who learned Buck's techniques. This unusual cowboy/horseman has written books about his efforts, living in Sheridan, Wyoming. It's a delightful read about a gentle talented man who loves horses.
