Book Review of Flower Fairies: The Meaning of Flowers (Flower S.)

Flower Fairies: The Meaning of Flowers (Flower S.)
reviewed So much more information - with delightful illus. by Cicely Mary Barker on + 42 more book reviews

This short book (40 pages) is full of numerous and colorful images of Cicely Mary Barker's watercolor Flower Fairies along with extracts from her poems. Although I am no longer a child, I found the folklore - fairylore (fairy uses)- superstitions - magic spells and remedies associated with the various flowers and plants within very interesting, entertaining and fun. Some Examples:
TULIPS: In the seventeenth century, Tulip bulbs were considered a gourmet delicacy when boiled and eaten with butter. During World War II, when the Dutch were starving under German occupation, Tulip bulbs shot up in price because they had become a life-saving food.
POPPY: Dragon-lore: According to old English legend, the brilliant red Poppy sprung up out of the blood of a slayed dragon.
DAISY: Cure for insanity: Steep the Daisy in wine and drink a small dose every day for 15 days.... (maybe I should try out this one)

The above are just a few samples. Enjoyable book.
