This is another tale of the Jacobite Rebellion: a dark period of loyalty and betrayal in Scottish history. The hero is a mere vagabond who, while housebreaking assumes the identity of a servant, thus becoming a messenger for "the Cause." An undertaking that he performs not too well; not only once but again. When he finally delivers the message it is too late. Nonetheless he wins the heart of the lady who send him forward in the first place. So, if you can fathom all of his blunders for "the Cause," you should be prepared for the ending. As in his other historical romancses, it is replete with descriptions of the countryside and name dropping of places and towns that will send you screaming for a map. The Scotch brogue will often leave you screaming for a translator.
