I resisted reading this for a while, because I liked her Temeraire series so much and I was afraid I'd be disappointed. But no! This is a really nice YA fantasy, with a wonderfully engaging and plucky heroine, a cantankerous wizard who has to teach her, and the terrifying battle against the Wood. Great descriptions, excellent characters, great world-building, a bit of romance, and it's a standalone!
