This edition includes two alternate chapters. For some reason, Austen rewrote Chapters 23 & 24; the earlier version (in this book as an appendix) had Captain Wentworth speaking to Anne, rather than writing her a letter.
Foolish Jane! Did she not know that the romance editors of today would have been horrified to have a mere letter substituted for a face to face confront between hero & heroine? This book couldn't have been sold today, and I say, today's romances, with all their editorial 'rules' are the poorer by comparison.
