I thought this was a good but not great account of a very promising baseball play. Tony Conigliaro had a the makings of a superstar ballplayer but saw that promise cut short by a fastball to the head in 1967.

The book was heavy with stories of Tony C growing up and provides a good account of his life in and out of baseball up through 1969. Personally, I found that the comeback from injury in 1969 and 1970 was under reported. The detail on his 1975 comeback receives more covrage.

The book is well researched and is well written. Since it was written after Tony's death, we have no contributions from the subject other that previously printed quotes from newspapers, magazines and his 1970 autobiography.

Where does he rank with the others that saw their promising careers shortened by injury? How about quotes from baseball experts? I'm glad I read it but was hoping for more. Still, fan's of the 60's and Red Sox fans will enjoy this book although the tragic outcome is well known by those that follow Boston baseball.
