The author illuminates the personal and private side of this complex character (Elizabeth The Great) -- particularly her emotional attachments and, through a sympathetic analysis of her childhood and adolescence, her steadfast refusal to marry. While dealing with her subject primarily as a woman, however, the author never forgets the impact which, as Queen, Elizabeth I made on a whole era. Good historical reading.
