Third in the series about Gustav and Otto Amlingmeyer, two eternally broke 1890's cowboys who want to be detectives. Well, Gustav wants to be Sherlock Holmes, and Otto is doing his best to be Watson. In this adventure they have just been turned down by the Pinkerton Agency in San Francisco when they spot Dr. Gee Woo Chan, from their previous job as guards on the Southern Pacific railroad. He's obviously in trouble but before they can insert themselves into his life, he's murdered. And Diana Corvus, also from the railroad, appears again too. In a flash the three of them are running for their lives in lawless Chinatown, being chased by the tongs and SF police alike. It's still told in the same humorous fashion but there's some pretty dark stuff happening: slavery, prostitution, opium addiction, and the sad reason for the murder. I felt the middle of the book was just one long chase scene - it is funny, but it doesn't advance the plot much. But I do like spending time with the boys - Otto's POV is a treat - and I'll be getting to the next in the series pretty soon.
