Erotica is a term now used for works that are considered sexually stimulating, but in many cultures sexual imagery in art has also had other, more complex, meanings and purposes. This selection of erotica from the British Museums collections ranges from the Stone Age to the 19th century, and includes everything from bawdy humor and social satire to protective amulets, illustrations of myth and expressions of mystical and religious beliefs.
