Give me old school anyday! I LOVE this book! Yes, it's from 1984 but it's better than all of the elementary grammar books I have ever used. Not only do some schools NOT use a phonics program (it's now called "whole language") but they're skipping grammar basics. Today we call verbs "action words" because that's what kids understand. Forget about teaching them past, present or future tenses. They can't comprehend the difference. School districts are buying bundled programs from publishers like we change socks. Every year it's a new publisher with a new program. Professors, who have NEVER set foot in an elementary or secondary school environment, are coming up with new catch-phrases and new curriculum. If we stick to old school, we'll be fine. Like many others, I'm a product of the 1970s-80s and I didn't do so bad!
