This is the best book I've read this year. They should be read in order, because they build on each other. John Pickett, during a bank robbery, finds out that he has a half-brother. This child is being used as a means to access small spaces and enter businesses for theft. Mr. Colquhoun, John's magistrate boss, tells John that he will give Mr. Maxwell the job of investigating the bank robbery, but John should shadow the investigation to snag his brother before the law arrests all of the miscreants. All of the robbers will hang because someone has been killed in the execution of the crime.
This is a very different story because John has to infiltrate the robbers to save his brother. Unfortunately, they know precisely who John Pickett is and want to murder him. John gets around that by suggesting a bigger heist, stealing gold from the Bank of England. This is a rousing tale that is amazing. I loved it.
