Times are tough in Italy and it doesn't look like it will be getting better any time soon. When Det. Scamarcio is called to the scene of a body hanging from a bridge, he assumes it is just another result of the economic downturn. However, when two Americans show up demanding that the body be turned over to them, Scamarcio suspects something else is afoot. As the investigation progresses, the victim's body disappears from the morgue and Scamarcio is repeatedly warned off the investigation. Determined not to be deterred, he realizes that there may be a connection to an old case and a conspiracy going back half a century.
The American by Nadia Dalbuono is the second novel in the Det. Leone Scamarcio series, set in Rome, Italy. Scamarcio is without a doubt one of the more unique literary characters I've come across, being the son of a mobster and choosing to turn his back on his family in favor of enforcing the law. This alone provides for a variety of plots in what I hope will be a long-running series. Dalbuono has done well in creating a realistic series with that should be hit with fans of police procedurals. I look forward to going back and reading the preceding novel as well as subsequent ones. I give this book 4/5 stars.
