This book is much different than I anticipated. It is written almost like a well-done memoir that immerses you in a life experience you'd never really glimpse otherwise. I have read the nonfiction book "Sleepers" which also uses New York's Hell's Kitchen as a backdrop. Both very likely paint an pretty accurate picture of that world. It is a world/ country that is foreign to me--to almost all of us--but one that Orloff took me visiting like a well-informed, somewhat sardonic, sometimes bewildered herself, native tour guide.
