I remember the letter being featured in Los Angeles newspapers every year when I was a kid. However, when I used Christmas Cards with a theme based on this well known tale, most recipients (fellow office workers) were unfamiliar with it circa 1993. I suspect that is because it was known only in America and not so much abroad.
I myself do not care much for this retelling nor the illustrations--there are better versions (see Wikipedia). It is offered today on the branch library sale shelf for two bits but I am not going to lug it around as there is only one wish--too many PBS wishers cancel when fulfillment is offered.
