Don't miss the Dragnet reference - tells you right up front you're getting a hard-boiled mystery with a humorous wink on the side. Good characters, good dialog (complete with cursing, for those who are sensitive), and a nasty villain. I liked how Markowski and his partner grew in trust through the book, and the daughter makes an interesting dilemma. I thought the witchfinders were a touch over the top, but not impossible. Looks like there are a couple others in this series.
