Grade 2-4-Nine-year-old Patrick flies from his home in New York City to Maine to spend the month of August with his grandparents. This year, as a special surprise, his grandfather has built him a tree house. Unfortunately, Sammy and Seth, neighboring twins, quickly take it over and bully Patrick into submission. He and his friend Sarah think about telling Granddad, but first try to take matters into their own hands. They finally do enlist adult help, befriend the troubled boys, and share the tree house. Kroll's pacing is brisk and will keep youngsters turning the pages. The 14 short chapters with intriguing titles are punctuated by full-page black-and-white illustrations. Good fare for beginning chapter-book readers.
