I managed to avoid seeing the movie or hearing too much about this story so I could read the book first - it was a very good book, one that does keep you emotionally invested. Even though it concerns the horrific murder of a child, and some descriptions are very explicit, part of it is actually very uplifting as the story is told from her point of view from heaven or "visiting" her loved ones here on earth. It's a very good read - I was somewhat disappointed in one twist near the end and an anti-climactic ending, but still enjoyed the book.
