The Shores of Light is a panorama of literary life at a time when the American Arts were undergoing a great revival. The pieces run parallel, more or less, to the firsthandreportage collected in The American Earthquake. Among the figures presented are Sherwood Anderson, Eugene O'Neill, Ring Lardner, E. E. Cummings, H. L. Mencken, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Elinor Wylie, and Edna St. Vincent Millay. There are also personal impressions, sketches of life in the twenties, letters, satires, pieces on the classics and a lively picture of the little theaters that flourished below Washington Square.
