What a life! Rembrandt was an original person, as well as an artist. One of the most interesting parts of this book was the information about the Rembrandt Research Project. They have been trying, since 1968, to finally declare what was Rembrandt's work and what might have been work by his students or assistants. This is important because Rembrandt's works sell for multi-millions.
Rembrandt never made the obligatory trek to Italy to see the masters; he was too busy. Another amazing fact is that Rembrandt was already a success in his early twenties. The artist had one problem; he did not handle money well.
This is quite thorough; the book describes Rembrandt's poor money choices and eventual bankruptcy. That news caused Rembrandt's prestige to falter. It also explains his family life and the patrons who supported him in his early years. My only complaint is the fact that I had to sit at the computer (while reading), so I could see the artwork mentioned.
