This book is a primer on learning to cook more than a cookbook full of recipes. For instance, the author states that if you know the difference between an herb and a spice, then you shouldn't be reading her book! She goes into fire safety (never put water into an oil fire), the differences in spices by color, where to shop for the most bargains (and why a bargain isn't always a bargain), how to clean the food, what utensils to use, which appliances are used when...the tips are endless for the novice. A fantastic book to someone going away to college or out on their own for the first time, who balked at learning with an adult - until they realize just how quickly eating out adds up!
