This book is part memoir, part a dedication and chronicle of Class A baseball and those involved in playing, observing and dedicated to its continuation. Several of the fans dreamed or tried to become players themselves. When they failed to make the grade they became fans to encourage others. The author discusses his own life including the loss of a brother who promised to watch him play but never made it.
Loved the descriptions and interactions of fans like Joyce and Bill, players like Danny Carroll, Henry Contreras, Nick Frankllin and Erasmo Ramirez, and Lumberkings staff members like John Tamargo.
The story couldn't take place in any other community than Clinton, IA. Fascinating view of a small town struggling to survive, cope with industry and keep their baseball team.
This is an interesting and introspective treatise about baseball, people and a small town dedicated to supporting its Class A team. Thought provoking!
