Michael married Brenna and left the morning after their wedding to go to war. He stayed gone for 9 years and remained away even after the war ended (see book 2). When he returns, he finds Brenna a different person. She's had to be.
This was harder to get into, it's much slower paced (in part d/t story-line and traumas inflicted in the past). It's also a 2nd chance romance (of sorts) and I'm generally not a huge fan of them. It was very easy to pick up and put down.
I did like that Michael had to woo Brenna and right some wrongs. It helped also that they knew each other as kids (she was 8 when she came to live with Michael and his family as his betrothed). I admit to being disappointed at the end. I wanted a certain person to suffer and he didn't.
