This book appears under two different titles - the one above and Margrit and The Yellow Dog. Simenon is a French mystery writer, new to me, who wrote over 100 mysteries and stories. Really like his style. Quite often I can determine who did the murder(s) before the culprit is revealed. This was not true in this case. In this mystery Leon LeGlerec, a huge simple dockworker, is believed to be the murderer. However, Superintendent Maigret and his assistant, Leroy, discover otherwise. The first incident occurs when a well-known and well-liked man is shot in the stomach but he survives. Then one of his friends disappears, leaving his blood stained car with a broken window parked by the river. Another friend is poisoned and dies. Dr. Michoux is so afraid that he will be next that the inspector has him locked up. It all comes to a head as the inspector unravels the details to discover the actual murderer.
