This winner of both the Whitbread book of the Year AND the Whitbread Novel of the Year tells the story of a very young caucasian boy who was sold into slavery for $15 after the Civil War. Astoundingly, it is true that this practice was not uncommon in the south after war. They were called "boughten boys".
