A lot of potential here, which I felt was undermined by the absence of a satisfying plot.

Now, I don't mind books that are light on plot: some of my favorite novels hinge on the most fragile wisp of a story arc. Some novels in which "nothing happens" are the ones that burrow most deeply into your heart, because they demonstrate that the slightest, most subtle shift of the world on its axis leaves you with a wound that lasts forever. Example, you ask? "The Thin Place," by Kathryn Davis. Also mildly "spooky,"magical realism, also set in an off-beat, out of the way place, also plays with point of view, time slips and a shifting cast of characters. But I found that, in the end, it wholly satisfied me, in a way that this did not.
