This was a good book! I really liked how Lord Soth was truly evil...he did not do a single noble deed through out the entire book. Even if he "saved" his allies it was only because he was not done with them yet - not because he cared about them in any fashion.

My favorite part of the book is when he and his werebeast companion take a portal that deposits them in a very strange and depressing place. A tunnel of darkness where he confronts a shadow (demon?) and her hound. Very chilling scene honestly, and I actually felt kinda sorry for her!

The flashbacks were masterfully done and filled in a lot of back story to Soth - you got to understand what happened to him and that he was indeed his own doom. My two minor complaints are that I found it unreasonable that he would throw away everything at the end of the book to get revenge on a minor lackey. Also, I think Lord Soth and Strahd would have went at it - no holds barred - until one or the other was dead (again). In short, I didn't like the way they had two or three "close calls" and each time somehow avoided direct combat.

Overall, I give this story a 4 out of 5 stars and really enjoyed it!
