For the past six years Rachel Fairchild has successfully run her father's estate, happily avoiding London society in favor of quieter countryside delights. While out riding one day, Rachel encounters her new neighbor, Jason Beaumont, an American privateer who recently became the earl of Falconridge. Rachel's hope to never again cross paths with the brash, arrogant American is dashed once her father and grandfather betroth her to him. Fortunately, Jason has as little interest in marrying her as Rachel has in becoming his wife, so together the two of them concoct a scheme to avoid their impending wedding. Their plans take a small detour once they realize someone is trying to kill Jason, but even more distracting is the fact that they both are starting to enjoy each other's company
