This is the second book I've read by this author. I loved this one like I loved the other (Follow My Lead). The books seem to have some things in common that really appeal to me. This author takes unlikable, and maybe even slightly obnoxious, people and turns them into characters you end up loving. She reveals hidden depths of character to them, and even with their flaws, humor is added that ends up giving them greater dimensions. Another thing I like is that her couples don't start off instantly falling for one another (basing their attraction on just looks or a feeling), but rather, they get to know each other very well as they go through unromantic situations together and start to discover qualities in each other that they really like. She also adds clever humor and banter between her couples that make them more appealing to one another and the reader. I enjoyed the intrigue involved in this story. With a play on the whole "cloak and dagger" genre, this story uncovered a plot by a deadly French spy to stir up trouble between England and France, with the goal of bringing the two countries back into war with one another so certain parties could profit. The book mixed both the serious war related issues of death, devastation, and the tolls taken with being a spy, with lighter things like the romanticizing of spies and the shallowness of the Ton wanting their next big shock or scandal to entertain them.
