For a novel that is written by someone who never experienced Vietnam in person the author does a pretty good job of getting the daily routines, love, hate, fear, depression, etc down on paper. Following the main character from high school graduation to Vietnam and back home again is pretty much accurate (as far as a novelization goes) A little antiwar propaganda thrown in covers both aspects of the war...those that believed and those opposed to Vietnam. The book is short, 213 pages and reads fast. It would have been even a better book if it was longer. For those vets who served in Vietnam this book may seem superficial and for those that never served it may seem that some aspects of the war was glossed over but all in all it's a good novelization about the journey of one teen from young adult to manhood.
