This is a strange book. In it Chesbro seems to explore his ideas about the paranormal, death and near-death, all tied up in an espionage tale involving CIA double agents working for the KGB. Veil Kendry is an ex-CIA agent/Vietnam vet who has retired from the military under a cloud, and now is an artist. His paintings attract the attention of Jonathan Pilgrim, head of an institute that secretly conducts studies of "Lazarus People", those who have had near-death experiences. The KGB, who conducted many research projects into the paranormal, are of course also interested and try to kill Veil. What follows is a bizarre adventure that pushes the boundaries of people's beliefs, religious and otherwise. Chesbro seems to have intended this as the beginning of another series after introducing the character of Veil in one of his Mongo novels, but it looks like he abandoned the idea as he only wrote 2 books.
