Ramona Quimby is excited when she goes to her first day of kindergarten. She goes with her mother and the Kemps. When they arrive to the classroom, the teacher tells Ramona to sit for the present. Only Ramona thinks that it is a real present as a prize. No one gets told about a present. When the teacher assist into playing "Gray Duck" Ramona sits. The teacher is embarrassed as well is disappointed Ramona. Ramona longs to pull on Susan's long curls.

When Ramona's turn proceeds, she pulls on Susan's curl and gets in trouble. The classroom goes in for resting time and Ramona, to show that she is resting, begins to snore softly. Susan is quiet and resting and is chosen to be the Wake-Up Fairy. Susan picks Ramona last. On the next day, Ramona brings Chevrolet to school, her doll. Howie doesn't have anything so Ramona gives him a beat up rabbit. The teacher gives Howie a ribbon and Ramona thinks it is her. Howie gives back the rabbit but not the ribbon so he and Ramona fight for it.

Howie loves to take wheel, takes on wheel off Ramona's trike and gives her the ribbon. The fight is over. Ramona then sees Davy and the more she sees him the more she longs to kiss him. Ramona begins to chase him around the playground every day. Ramona comes to school one day and instead of Mrs. Binney, she sees a substitute. Ramona feels that Mrs. Binney had left them alone and runs away. She hides behind the trash cans but is found by her sister Beezus. Beezus sends her back to her classroom where Ramona does seatwork.

Ramona finds a worm and wraps it around her finger acting like it is an engagement ring. Ramona later decides she will be marrying Henry when he saves her and her new boots from sinking on the mud puddle. It is Halloween and Ramona decides to be 'The Baddest Witch in the World'. Ramona pulls Susan's curl without being notices, and she even kisses Davy. Ramona feels forgotten so before the parade she goes inside her room and rights 'Ramona Q.' on a card and goes on.

Ramona is happy because her tooth had fell off and the class admire it. Susan calls Ramona a pest so Ramona pulls her curls. Ramona gets in trouble and is sended outside, where she feels picked on. Ramona goes home and realizes she left her tooth with Mrs. Binney. Ramona then begins to feel picked on and decides that she will never go back to kindergarten. Beezus makes fun of Ramona, as so does Mary Jane. Ramona begins to feel mad until Howie comes with a letter for Ramona. It's from Mrs. Binney and it has her tooth. Ramona then decides she will go to school tomorrow, but Howie says she can't because it is Saturday.
