I started this book and thought, "I really like Paige - she's feisty". By the halfway point, it was more like, "I can't believe how annoying she is!" This is one of those books where the characters never speak ... they shriek ... they screech ... they cry ... they shout .... they wail ... you get the picture. An occasional shriek or wail goes a long way to setting the atmosphere in a scene, but when it is so overdone, it ceases to make an impact. Set in 1940's New York, Paige works for Daring Detective Magazine, and she is asked to look into the murder of a beautiful secretary. Her investigation leads her into the world mob-run clubs, high-class prostitutes and a world-class crooner. Unlike many cozy heroines, Paige actually investigates, rather than relying on gossip, which is refreshing. But she also tends to be hysterical and overly emotional, which is grating on the nerves. I did think the ending was well-conceived.
