While a bit long, compared to many of today's thrillers. MacInnes novel of the early days of World War II in Poland is exceptional. It follows a young English woman who visits Poland to see if she is really in love with a member of the Polish minor aristocracy who visited her family on England.

She delays leaving the country until it is too late and finds herself helping the Poles in their battle. She is also introduced into the complexities of spying, teaching her the lessons of trust and duplicity.

Many of today's novelists could take lessons from MacInnes and how she weaves her plots and develops her characters.
