Excellent review of Mr. Straight Arrow by Jeremy Treglown.
John Hersey was enamoured with fiction, although begged by editors for more of his great non-fiction pieces.
"Back in New York, in the late nineteen-thirties, he successfully wooed Kennedy's girlfriend, a North Carolina textile heiress named Frances Ann Cannon, while Kennedy was away in England. A few years later, after Hersey had married her and published his second book of war reportage, 'Into the Valley,' JFK groused in a letter to his sister Kathleen, 'He's sitting on the top of the hill at this point--a best seller, my girl, two kids--big man on Time--while I'm the one that's down in the God damned valley.'"
