The enigmatic Dr. Quirke is back, as stubborn and curious as ever, with his bottomless need to set the world to rights when his own life is in such shambles. In this volume, he and Inspector Hackett poke around the unusual suicide of a wealthy and admired businessman (not a spoiler, it happens on the opening pages). No evil Catholic priests or sexual perversity in this, Book 5 of the series, just odd families and corporate chicanery. The mystery is unraveled in the midst of the author's amazingly poetic descriptions of 1950s Dublin and insight into human nature and the soul of the Irish.
