Troy Ratcliffe discovers that his mother, a Chitimacha princess was abducted when she was only eighteen and newly wedded to the Chief of the Chitimacha tribe. Her abductor Jon Paul Ratcliffe, forces her to marry him. He did not know that she was pregnant with a son. Not wanting the townspeople to know that the boy is not his he raises him as his son. For twenty five years she is his wife, afraid to return to her people for fear of what Jon Paul will do to her and the boy. There is another brother born after her marriage to Jon Paul. Larry Ratcliffe. He is a drunk, a gambler and just a mean person. Now Troy's mother feels it is time for Troy, or Red Feather as is his Indian name, to return to his real father and his place with the Chitimacha tribe. Troy has fallen in love with the mail order bride that his brother Larry sent for and then lost in a poker game to Troy. Can he return to the life that was denied him. Will his new love live with him as an Indian? What will his white father do when he learns that he wants to return to his Indian family?
