After attending a wedding, Travis McGee and his buddy, Meyer, are lost while taking back roads home. As they drive unfamiliar Cypress County roads searching for Tmiami Trail and the highway home, a woman crosses, running in front of them. They are driving McGee's beloved Rolls Royce pickup he calls Miss Agnes. Turning sharply, he misses her but lands in a ditch filled with water. Bedraggled, dirty and wet they climb onto the road.

The two are walking when a man in a red pickup drives past yelling and shooting. He misses and they continue to a garage they passed earlier. As the arrange for Miss Agnes to be pulled out, a sheriff arrives and arrests them for murder. Both are interrogated and Meyer is badly beaten. .

The murdered man is thought to have been involved in an armored truck robbery several years past . Both money and robbers disappeared. The sheriff alleges McGee and Meyer are accomplices. The three disagreed resulting in the murder. Neither of them had even heard of the dead man.

Because of his injuries, Meyer is taken to a hospital for treatment while McGee remains on good behavior as authorities investigate further. McGee's lawyer asks him to check out the situation. The case is complex and involves several local individuals, including a deputy who is blackmailing women to sleep with men. He keeps an incriminating gallery of photos.

Though dated, this very well written mystery has good characters typical of the time. The author wrote many mysteries worth checking. Good quick read.
