There are twenty books cited in the bibliography, three of them earlier works by Dr. Barth so he is obviously the authority. My copy is the third printing of the 1949 book and I imagine modernity and settlers later overtook the Basseri tribe. The chief had great authority over his people but had to contend with outside forces. Fortunately, the area was under military rule and thus less troubled by civil authorities.
