Book Review of When We Were Strangers

When We Were Strangers

Really loved this book, beautifully written. Immediately engages you and doesn't let go. About an Italian girl who comes to America and works first as a factory worker making collars, then as an assistant seamstress for fine ladies dresses, but ends up assisting at a community health center for immigrants where she learns from a self-educated, female practitioner how to suture wounds, diagnose illnesses and assist, and eventually work alone serving the poor. She has many bad things happen, but rises above. All the characters are well drawn.
