This book is set in the 1930's in India. It reminds me of books by M.M. Kaye. The author really captures the era, the language, the society, the atmosphere. It's like reading an author from that time period, with some sex (but not too much) thrown in.
I enjoyed it a lot, and highly recommend it. Particularly if you like reading period books.
