I hate to say this, but if there was the equivalent publishing mechanism like the Harlequin romances, this is becoming the poster child.

The basic story is not bad or good â just standard. If it wasn't for Mavis, Peabody, Bella, and (of course) Roarke, it would be a formulaic detective story, with no real suspense. What made some of the past 5 books tolerable was side character developments (not too much each time, but just enough). This time, there's not even that, really. And someone jumped on the MeToo bandwagon, but wasted a very nice potential thriller by not following through!

So it was a nice short visit with the NYCPSD Homicide Division. But these ghost writers better learn how to build tighter mysteries and more exciting climactic takedowns.
