The generosity of spirit in this novel is amazing - and totally un-sappy. Each of the characters has reasons to blame herself, yet they learn to reconcile with themselves and with others who have wronged them or whom they have wronged. The last page brought me to tears.
The book takes place in contemporary HongKong, and the book hints that even the most conventional, seemingly well-adjusted expatriate women there have depths of feeling you might not expect. Highly recommended, especially if you like reading stories set in non-American locales.
