A fascinating story of the six volunteer regiments of former Confederate soldiers which served the Union on the western frontier from the latter days of the Civil War until November 1866. One regiment even consisted of a number of former Union soldiers who, when captured, joined the Confederate Army to get out of prison camps and then later, when captured by the Union, volunteered again to serve in the volunteer regiments.

Briefly mentioned is Henry Morton Stanley, of "Dr. Livingston, I presume" fame, who served in the Civil War as a Union sailor, Confederate Soldier and Union soldier.

One company of former confederates was even commanded by a former Confederate.

Whether fighting Indians, counter-marching across the West, dying of disease, staving on poor rations or living it up at the Army's outpost in Salt Lake City, these men left their mark on the West. Considering the conditions they had to live under, it is a wonder so few deserted.
