Excellent sequel to California Bones, with a little less gore and a smaller body count. A triad of osteomancers took over power after Daniel killed the Hierarch and vanished with his golem, and now one of them has a new plan to take over California. Unfortunately it involves killing the golem, who is now Sam. I liked how Daniel, while having grown up under terrible circumstances, is a thoughtful and humane person. He's taught Sam to be that as well. But Daniel and Sam can't travel together any longer...
And just a nitpick, while the blurb for this book is written in the first person, the book itself is third-person omniscient POV.
