I love this kind of story! Had a similar feel to The Black Lyon, which I believe is the first one in the Montgomery series since Ranulf and Lyonene named their child Montgomery, but they must have been way before this time. The only thing mentioned was the Montgomery's had been around for hundreds of years.

The Velvet Promise is about the Montgomery brothers, 4 in total, and I can see from the way they were characterized I will want to read all of their stories. Gavin the oldest Montgomery, he feels he is in love with the manipulative Alice, daughter of a poor drunken baron. She wants to marry for money, which the Montgomery's are lacking due to some past political turmoil, so she strings along Gavin for the good hard sex and marries an abusive Earl for his lands and riches. Gavin then marries Judith a wealthy heiress who he thinks is going to be hideous, but once he sees her he is awestruck by her beauty. Judith is pleasantly surprised by her handsome groom as well. Alice is green with envy and plots and destroys over and over to ruin Gavin and Judith happiness. Lots of deceit and jealousy throughout the book with many cruel villains and lots of conflicts to overcome. I loved both the H and h, their chemistry was sizzling, they couldn't get enough of each other even when they hated one another. There was also several secondary romances throughout the book that were a positive bonus. Already started Highland Velvet- great so far!
